A Journey Along the “Shogun Road”

Bonsai represents vast nature condensed into a single vessel. From the roots and trunk to the branches and leaves, every element invites admiration. Shaped through a dialogue between human craftsmanship and the life of the tree, bonsai is often described as a conversation with a miniature universe.
Omiya is home to numerous bonsai gardens, including the Bonsai Art Museum, reflected in the town name, “Bonsai-cho” (Bonsai Town).
Often associated with warfare, samurai also cultivated a refined appreciation for beauty and nature. Bonsai became part of this refined culture as Japan gradually entered an era of peace.

With a history spanning 2,500 years, Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Shrine is the head shrine of more than 280 Hikawa shrines across Japan. Throughout its long history, it has been deeply revered by emperors and samurai alike.
The shrine’s two-kilometer approach is lined with towering zelkova trees. As you pass through its three torii gates, you can feel the atmosphere gradually shift as you draw closer to the sacred grounds.

Kawagoe Castle once served as a strategic stronghold protecting the northern approaches to Edo and maintained close ties with the Tokugawa Shogunate. Its elegant wooden architecture, traditional tatami rooms, and tranquil gardens offer a rare glimpse into the refined lives of the samurai elite.
For those wishing to explore deeper into Japan’s samurai history, Oshi Castle—known as the “Floating Castle”—can also be added to the journey. Once considered nearly impregnable, it offers fascinating insights into the strategies and conflicts of the Warring States period.

The atmosphere of the Edo period lives on in Kawagoe. Affectionately known as “Ko-Edo” (Little Edo), this historic castle town offers a vivid glimpse into the culture and scenery of Japan’s past.
Stroll through the historic Warehouse District, lined with elegant kura-zukuri buildings with distinctive black plaster walls, and discover the iconic “Toki no Kane” (time bell tower), which has marked the passage of time for centuries.
Kawagoe is also home to its celebrated annual festival, recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Kitain is one of Kawagoe’s most historic and distinguished temples, with a history spanning more than 1,200 years. It is renowned for several buildings relocated from Edo Castle, including the very room where Iemitsu, the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, was born.
Kitain is also home to the “Gohyaku Rakan,” a remarkable collection of 500 stone statues created during the Edo period. Each statue has its own unique expression and personality, and as you walk among them, you may even discover one that reminds you of yourself or someone you know.
