As the season approaches winer, seafood becomes fatter to prepare the cold, making it more delicious.

Cosmos flowers are enjoyed in various parks. In Japan, they have been literally translated as Autum Sakura because of the shape of their petals.

Mt. Fuji shot in the early morning of November with the maple leaves.

Mt. Nantai in Nikko turns into a multi colored mountain from October with Lake Chuzenji at its base.

Introduction

Autumn in Japan

As summer fades, autumn graces Japan with a quiet brilliance. Mountains and gardens blaze with crimson and gold, while Japanese maple leaves flutter like painted whispers. The season unfolds with harvest festivals that honour nature’s gifts – mushrooms, chestnuts and sweet potatoes enrich every meal.

The September equinox softens the sun, inviting quiet walks through hidden gems shrouded in fiery foliage. In October, the gentle scent of osmanthus lingers on the breeze, a delicate reminder of the change of season.

In Japan, autumn is not just a time – it is a poetic transformation of the land itself.

More Information

Nature

As summer fades, the arrival of autumn is marked by the fragrance of Osmanthus flowers and the gradual change in foliage. By mid-October, the famous crimson leaves of Japanese maples dominate the landscape, creating breathtaking views in parks and mountains. The cool breeze and crisp air bring a refreshing energy, making autumn one of the most picturesque seasons.

For an immersive autumn trip, Nikko is a perfect desination where history and nature meet in brilliant harmony. The fiery colours of Mt. Nantai and the shimmering shores of Lake Chuzenji create an unforgettable natural spectacle.

Festivals

Autumn in Japan is synonymous with harvest festivals, where communities gather to give thanks for a successful agricultural season. These festivals, steeped in tradition, often take place in rural regions. These vibrant celebrations, filled with processions, music, and colorful displays, are a reflection of Japan’s deep cultural appreciation for the blessings of the season and the land’s bounty.

In the Kanto region, Tori-no-Ichi is a vibrant festival held in November. It’s a time when locals pray for business success and purchase decorative kumade, ornate rakes said to “gather fortune.” Traditionally, the kumade is chosen a little larger than the previous year's to symbolize growth and ever-expanding prosperity.

Seasonal Food

Autumn, often referred to as the season of harvest, offers a variety of mushrooms and root vegetables, perfect for hearty rice-based dishes. Carrots, shiitake, and the highly prized matsutake mushrooms define the season’s earthy flavors. The seafood scene shifts to salmon, oysters, and bonito, now in its richest form after a summer spent in northern waters. As the weather cools, markets also brim with persimmons, Fuji apples, chestnuts, and Japan’s famous giant grapes, creating an abundance of nutrient-packed, flavorful fruits.

Activities

Autumn in Japan is ideal for those who love outdoor activities. As the weather cools and the landscapes turn vibrant with red and gold foliage, activities such as golfing, mountain hiking, and biking become especially enjoyable. Fishing in Japan’s tranquil rivers is another popular pastime. This season provides the perfect opportunity to experience Japan’s natural beauty while participating in active pursuits, offering an immersive connection with both the land and the changing seasons.
